Privacy

Your cards are yours.

This page describes how Bifold treats your data, in plain language. It is a draft: the full policy is with counsel and will replace this text before launch. The commitments below are the ones the app is built around.

Draft, pending legal review. This is not yet the binding privacy policy. The final policy, the App Store privacy label and the in-app wording will be made to agree word for word before Bifold ships.

In short

  • Bifold does not track you. There is no advertising identifier, no third-party analytics SDK, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
  • Your cards, courses and review history live on your iPhone and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud account. We cannot read them there.
  • When you use cloud AI, the material you choose (a photo, a PDF, a paragraph) is sent to our server to make cards or an explanation. It is processed and not kept after the request. Everything labelled On-device never leaves your phone. on-device AI at launch
  • No account is required to use Bifold. Purchases go through Apple.

What stays on your device

Your cards, media, courses, settings, streak and the full review log are stored in a local database on your iPhone. The phone is the source of truth; iCloud is a mirror. Deleting the app deletes the local copy.

iCloud sync

If sync is on, Bifold stores your data in the private database of your iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit. It is protected by your Apple Account and Apple's encryption; Payette Forward has no access to the contents. Turning sync off stops new uploads; you can remove the iCloud copy from the app's settings.

Cloud AI

Cloud features (cards from PDFs, slides, long text and photos; long-form explanations) send the content you choose to a server we operate, which forwards it to an AI model provider to generate the result. The provider will be named here, and in the app before you first use a cloud feature. Content is not used to train models, is not stored after the response is returned, and is not linked to your identity beyond what is needed to enforce usage caps for your purchase. Our server records request timing and size for abuse prevention, not your content. The quality check on AI-made cards works the same way. quality check at launch

Features labelled On-device use Apple Intelligence on your iPhone and send nothing anywhere. at launch

Purchases

Subscriptions and the Semester Pass are sold by Apple through the App Store. Bifold uses RevenueCat to check what you have purchased; this involves an anonymous app-user identifier and your purchase receipt, not your name or payment details. Apple's own privacy policy governs the transaction.

Study Buddy at launch

In two-phone sessions, only the current card travels between the phones, over a direct local connection that is paired and encrypted. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing remains on the other phone when the session ends. at launch

Diagnostics

Bifold uses Apple's MetricKit for crash and performance reports, which are aggregated and anonymous and arrive only if you have allowed Apple to share analytics with developers. Bifold does not include any other diagnostics or analytics service.

Children

Bifold is designed for college students and adults, and is not directed at children under 13.
